Yessssssss, I finished that ep ^_^ Well, it was nearly-all recons. I'd lost the habit of that. XD Doesn't mean it wasn't nice though! Well, still, I don't have a lot to say about it. Mostly the second part stood out, and I was grateful this one was the only one available for real—I liked the clever thinking about how the explosions worked, breaking the magnetic pull so the beacons wouldn't be entirely destroyed but fragmented into parts, and the fact that this allowed the Doctor to try and pull the pieces together again. That was such a delightfully angsty part, the Doctor trying his hardest to save Jamie, Zoe and himself but knowing there were chances that they wouldn't make it. That moment when he told Zoe "Don't be a pessimist", with such a tired, tired look—desperate, but fighting on for all of their sakes… And that part when they were sharing oxygen and he gave his companions more because he didn't need as much as them. Alienness + selflessness. I loved it to bits. Also, the Doctor was practically sprawled across Jamie's lap with his head against his belly and I approved of that too.

Also, Milo was fun, if a bit shouty. ^_^

ZOE: There's one thing I don't understand.
MILO: Well you're very lucky, girl. There's about a hundred thousand things I don't understand, but I don't stand around asking fool questions about them, I do something useful.

^_^

Next up is The War Games. HOW DID THAT EVER HAPPEN?

Trying to cross-post in HTML this time—fingers crossed!

The Seeds of Death! That was another pretty nice episode. I greatly enjoyed seeing the Ice Warriors again, though their hissy voices are honestly a pain; it made me think back on Cold War fondly, and enjoying all the Two-era references in s7. The GI, the Ice Warriors, the Brigadier's daughter! :D Plus the Zygons as far as classics are concerned. Lovely stuff.

The plot was nice, fungus is another recurring enemy. XD I really enjoyed Fewsham's role, it was quite emotional. His state of complete terror was obvious throughout the episode, of course he is being a coward compared to the more heroic members of the moonbase's crew, but we can't all be heroes. He had seen a colleague killed and was frantic and fearing for his life, and he followed the Ice Warriors because he was so terrified, but he also hated the idea of harming anyone, let alone the whole of Earth—and despite his cowardice, in the end he saved Zoe, delivered crucial information, and sacrifized himself in the process. If that is not redemption I don't know what is. ♥ So he was very good. I also liked Miss Kelly, though she was pretty much the opposite, very business-like, dutiful and a bit cold. And Professor Eldred and his passion for rockets, he was very fun!

Also, Zoe was very brave and super clever as usual and I love her. And Jamie and the Doctor, naturally. Jamie saved the Doctor twice, I think, go Jamie. And apparently the Doctor called Victoria and Jamie's names when he awoke after being knocked out by the deadly seeds' effects? Well.

Moral things: the Doctor apparently had no qualms against destroying the whole fleet of the Ice Warriors as long as he saved the Earth. No giving them a chance here, greater good in action. Maybe he tried to discuss earlier and I just didn't notice as much. They were hissy and not very prone to discussing anything with humans anyway.

Episodes always seem to end with side characters asking the Doctor's opinion about something or wanting to tell him thank you or whatever, looking up, and being like "where have they gone now?". This is fun. XD

Fun lines:

ZOE: At our present rate of drift and allowing for the usual gravitational influences, we'll be drawn into the heart of the sun in approximately five months and ten days.
JAMIE: No need to worry about that, then.
ZOE: What do you mean?
JAMIE: We've only got enough food and water for three days, remember?

ZOE: Are you all right?
PHIPPS: Oh yes, I'm fine. I've seen most of my friends killed. I'm being hunted by monsters.

Aw, baby. ♥

COMPUTER: Total breakdown of social order predicted. And this is so heart-lifting.

DOCTOR: Yes, but have you tried to understand [the fungus]?
GREGSON: Are you suggesting we should psychoanalyse it, Doctor?
ROFL.

Next up: The Space Pirates! And it's a recon! :( But it's the very last recon EVER I think, and then it's the War Games, yesssss! ♥

The Krotons was a good episode, albeit one I took ages watching because of s8 airing and because I kept busy with all sorts of things. It had a planet with twin suns and the Doctor messing around with an umbrella; it had an interesting plot, with some of those themes we see recurring in old eps, a civilization overpowered and controlled by another species and struggling to break free after a while, with the most extreme rebels who wanted to fight no matter what, even when it seemed they were so poorly armed and would just get killed, vs. older, wiser leaders who might be a bit conservative but mostly wanted to keep everyone protected; it had that interesting bit about how the Krotons fed the Gonds all of their knowledge, but only what they wished them to know, therefore keeping them from truly evolving, but one could figure out which areas in particular they wanted to keep them in the dark about, and use that knowledge as a weapon to find out their vulnerabilities (when you're called the Doctor that is). There was Zoe being super clever and acing an intelligence test and being BETTER THAN THE DOCTOR at first, until he pulled himself together a bit—but clearly she was still drop-down genius and not inferior to him in the slightest. The Doctor did hypnosis. Jamie told Zoe to look after the Doctor, all protective and great. The Doctor said "Oh my giddy aunt!" and "Great jumping gobstoppers!". Jamie was considered as thoroughly stupid by the Krotons and could get all kinds of relevant information out of them because of that. The HADS happened for the first time and the Doctor's reaction to the TARDIS saving itself from harm was "what a stupid place to land". It was good.

I might try and do something productive right now or I might just say fuck it and watch a bit of The Seeds of Death instead, because my brain doesn't want thoughts or productivity or anything much at all. But I'll see what the evening turns out like.

Quick-ish review this time because I don't have that much to say. It was pretty cool to see the Brigadier again, along with UNIT—the upbeat UNIT theme was quite enjoyable :) Villain-wise, Vaughn was pretty one-dimensional and megalomaniac but it was still interesting seeing his dynamic with the second-in-command Packer (Packer first being the ruthless and sadistic employee, but then he starts feeling anxious and out of his depth when he sees Vaughn growing too full of himself and out of control). Also interesting seeing Vaughn and the Doctor having to cooperate against the Cybermen at the end, and Vaughn refusing to help out of any goodness or sense of pity, but doing so out of hate for the Cybermen who destroyed his vision…

Right. Review time. The Mind Robber—pretty fascinating episode :D Pretty tricky, quite inventive. In a way it gave me Celestial Toymaker vibes, with the fictional characters in lieu of toys, and the presence at the core, pulling the strings, playing with the team TARDIS' minds. There are also Space Museum vibes somehow, because tricky and clever. I really enjoyed the beginning with the unknown presence trying to lure Jamie and Zoe out, showing them their home planets on the screen, they were so obviously entranced and longing—they might be happy traveling with the Doctor, but the draw of home is still ever so strong. They were so caught, they couldn't even think rationally and realize it wasn't normal that each of them had seen their home planet, and it was obviously a trick…

Soooo I was SO excited to begin watching Wheel in Space, because ZOE. I'd looked her up, and the whole idea of the character—superclever, socially/emotionally-awkward girl—just made me really excited. It wasn't a letdown; she's really great, that girl. First, her dynamic with Jamie is great—sibling-like indeed, like I'd read before, all that bickering, it's lovely. I was madly eager to see her meet and interact with the Doctor, the little genius—and that was delightful indeed. She was so certain about her deductions and knowledge, but the Doctor taught her some valuable lessons—"Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority" and "Simple common sense works wonders sometimes, Zoe". Loved how Two asked for Jamie's insight too. That team!TARDIS is pretty complementary (noticed that in The Dominators afterwards too)—Zoe and Two are the big brains, Jamie is solid common sense and practical plans. No one gets overlooked. Love it :D

Trying to get shit done this evening, aka: good amount of work during the day, daily catching up with emails (struggling not to get TOO far behind is more like it…), loading the AO3 updates I have yet to read on my Kindle (thanks for the heads-up, [livejournal.com profile] elisi, that one is getting pretty handy ;)), typing a comment on Amazon for the ebook I've just finished reading—all checked, and now I'm eventually getting around to classic!Who reviews. Just so you guys know, this is the Web of Fear one but I've seen Fury from the Deep in the meantime and am halfway through Wheel in Space. Yeah. XD I AM SO IN LOVE WITH ZOE but that is a subject for another review. For now… yeah, I'll try to get this one started, at least. In the best of all worlds there would be fic-typing, icons and more Who after that, but LOL. No. Not happening ;P Eh.

So. Web of Fear. Read more... )

So The Enemy of the World was a pretty good serial too! ^_^ Doctor lookalikes ftw. Well, One had his, now Two has had his as well. The impersonating Salamander, the difference in accents and manners were very nice. I like the plot—more use of the theme of starvation and natural catastrophes, and ah, I just knew Kent might not turn out to be a good one in the end, either. :D Jamie and Victoria did nicely—Jamie especially—and the ending was great, I thought for a moment they were going to fall for Salamander impersonating the Doctor, and the struggle in the TARDIS/Salamander falling out into the vortex were thrilling! :D Besides, I liked Astrid (and her clothing), and loved Fariah. So sad she died :( But a good death can be a good fate too. ♥

Look, it's review time! This episode saw the first appearance of the Ice Warriors, and it was pretty fun. Plot-wise, I enjoyed the warriors, and I found the evolution of the planet the writers imagined pretty fascinating. Artificial foods to sort the problem of world famine, thus plants limited to a minimum, thus drop of carbon dioxide and the Earth's temperature drops, instead of increasing like it's currently doing—the glaciers take over instead of melting away. Given that this is 1967, it's fascinating to see them come up with something that is basically the contrary of what's happening now, and yet fits humanity so perfectly. The computer and humans being so very dependent on its instructions were also fascinating. I loved the characters of Penley and Clent, Clent is the kind you want to smack, so hard-headed, but his whole world revolves around order and that doesn't mean he's inhumane, he just… needs to cling to what he can control. Of course Penley is the opposite of that—the scientist, the creative mind—and would loathe such a character. It's great to see how their personalities clash around the ending, but when push comes to shove, the choice does go to humanity, not the computer, and taking risks is the only way to survive—so Penley does that, and saves them all. (Plus Penley's actions and the Doctor's added up to defeat the Warriors—neat.) Their acknowledging each other then was a BRILLIANT moment—Clent going "You are the most insufferably irritating and infuriating person I've ever been privileged to work with" and then "Can't write a report though, can you? Something I've got to do for you. Well don't worry, it's something that I've been trained to do." Babies! Or rather human, wonderfully human men, different and flawed and stubborn and fearful and brave. I loved those two so much, really.

Why hello there! It took me forever to get through that episode, as usual, but it was nice. I love Jamie and Victoria more and more; they are full of cuteness. I like their dynamic and their dynamic with Two, and how protective Jamie gets with Victoria. Two practising hypnosis, or rather breaking Victoria's, was fascinating, as always when we catch a glimpse of the Doctor's psychic powers. Also, the Doctor played "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in his cell. XD

It was interesting to see the first appearance of the Great Intelligence. Not much was said about it, and it kept throwing me when it was called "the Master", for the master of the monastery, but it's still always interesting to discover recurring characters for the first time. Apparently the Yeti will be back too, and soon! ^_^

That will be all, I didn't have that much to say there. Coming soon: Ice Warriors, the Brigadier in a few eps, and not too many recons for a while—yay!

Fun lines:

Jamie: "When you've been with the Doctor as long as I have, you begin to realise you don't know what he's talking about."

Jamie: "Oh no, my mistake. The great hairy beastie, it's the Doctor."

Jamie: "If you need me just yell your head off."
Victoria: "Don't worry, I will!"

Jamie: Hey, Doctor, if you really want to capture one of these beasties, I think I have an idea which might just work.
Doctor: Oh. Victoria?
Jamie: Eh?
Doctor: Victoria, I think this is one of those instances where discretion is the better part of valour. Jamie has an idea. Come along.
*they run off*

Doctor: "I know what I'm doing! I hope!"

*waves sleepily* Hello, hello. Well, I just spent most of my evening tucked between two pillows (the second one is a red, heart-shaped, super soft thing with an elephant pattern I'm currently cuddling to my stomach, which is naturally the most convenient thing to type—just in case anyone wanted to know, here you are), watching the end of that ep—at least the afternoon was productive. So review time it is.

Another nice ep, though it was only recons =) I'm liking that team!TARDIS more and more. The dystopia plot was quite nice, with the Big Brother-ish controller that turned out to be a giant beast. *snickers* It all seemed a lot too heavenly to be true at the beginning, and I really enjoyed seeing the team's reactions—the Doctor and Jamie wary, but Ben and Polly relishing it all, the luxury and being coddled. The brainwashing was interestingly depicted, with all the music/singing (cheerleaders going rah rah rah… Dear god =P), the voice speaking to implant its message in people's minds, the locals getting so WILD whenever the Macra were mentioned. It was interesting to see Ben fall prey to that, and entirely turning against his friends at first, then starting to struggle against it little by little. He completely turned into someone else, not even speaking with the same accent… Polly was nice too, though she did a lot of sobbing and screaming. Two's low, emotional voice at some times is a thing of beauty. Two as a general rule is perf. And I had nice Jamie feels, too ^_^ He's just so loyal and fierce and protective of his friends.
