Classic!Who s5—Fury From The Deep
Jul. 1st, 2014 10:33 pmLook who's catching up with reviews now!
Sooo, Victoria's goodbye ♥ All throughout the episode it was very obvious that Victoria was just tired with all the adventures—frightened out of her wits, so shaky and desperately longing for safety and loveliness, the poor thing. It was interesting to see how much Jamie and Two acknowledged it, and their actual reaction at the end when it became clear that she wouldn't be leaving with them again. Throughout the ep, it was obvious both that Jamie cared for Victoria and was concerned about her well-being, but that he was also more focused on/used to thinking of the Doctor, telling Victoria not to worry him and so on. He was a lot more adjusted to and satisfied with the life they led, and had trouble realizing just how lost and scared Victoria could really feel. "Oh Jamie, I didn't know you cared."—that line made me go awww. I love how gentle and understanding and aware of Victoria's feelings Two was besides, and his encouraging her to make her own decision and telling Jamie to respect it. Overall, I really loved the focus on Victoria's goodbye: all goodbyes had been rather rushed affairs since Ian and Barbara, and it was really great here to see some proper emotional focus, the characters being attached and yet recognizing it was time to part. The Doctor's softly sad acceptance, the final scene between Jamie and Victoria (I just want to quote it all!)—it was all emotional and sweet. ♥
As for the plot, it was pretty nice—I liked the thing with the seaweed in the pipes and how it controlled the minds of some of the humans. The thing-hidden-within theme reminded me of the Macra Terror in a different way, and the creepy guys with things coming out of their mouths of The Eleventh Hour, except here it was gas that came out ;) The character of Megan Jones was pretty badass, sharp and imposing figure—she reminded me of Harriet Jones somewhat, but less funny and more authoritative. It was interesting seeing her dynamic with Robson, though the man himself was a bit of a bastard. The Megan/Robson feels were all the stronger somehow.
Other fun things:
- FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE SONIC SCREWDRIVER!
- Victoria doing science-y things with the Doctor as he analysed the seaweed;
- The Doctor could drive a helicopter just from seeing Astrid do it in Enemy of the World :D Wellll, it was a rough ride. Poor Jamie and Victoria. XD
- The Doctor made a weapon out of Victoria's scream, oh dear. XDDD It's all the more precious because she could be the last screamer in a while—Zoe doesn't seem to be the type, and then it'll be Three's companions… Not sure :) It kind of feels mocking-yet-sweet.
Not so sweet: the Doctor sending Victoria off to safety while he and Jamie were doing stuff. Wtf, protective sexism? Good thing the girl didn't listen to him and went off on her own way -_- Though she did get in trouble, haha.
Fun lines:
Chief: "Look, I can't send men down there without [Robson's] approval."
Van Lutyens: "Can you not also blow your nose without approval?"
Jamie: "There's a wee bit of power left in the old McCrimmon punch yet."
Two [in the helicopter]: "Yes, thank you so much. Oh, just one thing. I've got it up all right and it should be comparatively simple to propel it forward. However, how do I land it?"
Well, that's it for this ep. And this girlie is off to maybe type a bit of fic, maybe do icons, and almost certainly finish Wheel in Space ;) ♥

Date: 2014-07-02 04:57 pm (UTC)Here is the channel I use—it should have nearly everything. I've had a quick look over the One era, there were only two serials missing around the end of his run, and it should be just as little for the Two era, if any…
Enjoy! ^_^
