Classic!Who s5—The Wheel in Space
Jul. 12th, 2014 10:22 pmSoooo I was SO excited to begin watching Wheel in Space, because ZOE. I'd looked her up, and the whole idea of the character—superclever, socially/emotionally-awkward girl—just made me really excited. It wasn't a letdown; she's really great, that girl. First, her dynamic with Jamie is great—sibling-like indeed, like I'd read before, all that bickering, it's lovely. I was madly eager to see her meet and interact with the Doctor, the little genius—and that was delightful indeed. She was so certain about her deductions and knowledge, but the Doctor taught her some valuable lessons—"Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority" and "Simple common sense works wonders sometimes, Zoe". Loved how Two asked for Jamie's insight too. That team!TARDIS is pretty complementary (noticed that in The Dominators afterwards too)—Zoe and Two are the big brains, Jamie is solid common sense and practical plans. No one gets overlooked. Love it :D
So there was that, and emotional moments—loved how Zoe got told off for telling everyone about the meteorite threat and seeming so matter-of-fact about it, treating it as a simple fact. "All brain and no heart." How confused she seems, that was really moving. Some lines of hers were quite haunting:
"I don't want to be thought of as a freak. Leo said I was like a robot, a machine. I think he's right. My head's been pumped full of facts and figures which I reel out automatically when needed, but, well, I want to feel things as well."
"What good am I? I've been created for some false kind of existence where only known kinds of emergencies are catered for."
And I love her arrival, or rather her sneaking into the TARDIS. Two's reaction was interesting, a bit harsher than expected, showing her some scary memories to make sure she knew what she was getting into. After how things ended up with Victoria, it's understandable he would be careful before taking somebody else along. Speaking of Victoria, I liked the little conversation about her between Two and Jamie at the beginning—Jamie inquiring about her was quite moving, and so was Two deflecting the issue and acting fine ♥ Babies.
What else is there—oh, Cybermen, to open and close the season. Taking a Cybermat for a pet is definitely a bad idea, people. They're sooo cute though! However, we saw something they called a Cyberplanner too and that one wasn't sexy. XD I don't think
irishvampire13,
luorescence and
a_phoenixdragon would love him quite as much ;)
The side characters were good besides. Some good ladies there—Zoe of course, Gemma Corwyn was pretty epic, making great assessments of people, clever and badass. I was sad to see her die :( Lernov was nice in the background too. The Lernov/Ryan flirting was pretty sweet—they were so cute, simple and easy at the middle of mayhem, a bit like Ian/Barbara. I also noticed we've been getting a lot of obsessive, control-freak commanders these days—Ice Warriors, Fury From the Deep, now Wheel in Space… And it's either the scientists or the women to try and get them to see SENSE ;) Or both. Yay Gemma.
The Doctor's agitation when accused of recklessly risking Jamie and Zoe's lives gave me feels. Awww.
There were first bits about the TARDIS consciousness, with the Doctor acknowledging the ship was trying to warn them to get away to somewhere more pleasant. But the TARDIS was referred to as a he there, eh ;P
Interesting quote: "People are just edgy. Out in space, human beings have got to rely on routines, ordinariness. Confuse them and you got trouble." Nice insight.
Fun things:
- …the fact that all the fun stuff I picked is related to Jamie :D
- Jamie: What's the matter? Well, don't keep me in suspense, what's happened?
Two [all gloomy]: Have a lemon sherbet.
[later] Jamie: And perhaps we'll find some food in that machine as well.
Two: I can give you another lemon drop.
Jamie: Something a bit more substantial, please.
Two: What do you fancy?
Jamie: Well right now I'd like a nice plate of roast beef with all the trimmings.
Two: I'll see what I can do.
- Jamie [to unconscious Two]: But listen, you. Mo more gallivanting about till I say so.
- JAMIE COINING THE NAME JOHN SMITH. JAMIE IS RELEVANT AT EVERYTHING.
- Corwyn: Well, if you go along the corridor you'll see a door marked Parapsychology library.
Jamie: Para what?
- Zoe: Oh, a Scot. Scotland, of course. Pre-century history isn't my field, you see.
Jamie: Aye, maybe not, but just you watch your lip or I'll put you across my knee and larrup you.
- Two: What's the thing which we need to survive which the Cybermen don't?
Jamie: Food.
Two: Always thinking of your stomach, aren't you.
- OH LOOK IT'S NOT JAMIE
Ryan: Aren't you ever wrong?
Zoe: Rarely.

It's bad to discriminate cyberplanner according to their appearance! XD That's just a different kind of sexy (or rather, that one is more like my special brand of cute).

Date: 2014-07-13 12:20 am (UTC)Think that's half the reason why I ship Rory/Eleven so hard. Because Jaime/Two and Jaime breaking him in and those two being adorable and I cannot WAIT TO SEE THEM IN ACTION!! OMFG!!
We see a few versions of CyberPlanner and CyberLeader and yeah...Eleven!Cyber!Planner was definitely sexier and somehow scarier!! O_O
*HUGS*
