Icons #6—a batch of 40

Hello there, guys! Well, here I am again. New batch! Twenty-seven from s5 and the corresponding special, seven from s6, two from s7, two cast icons (Hartnell and Carole Ann Ford vs. Jenna-Louise Coleman and… well, a bit of Matt Smith's hand :D) and two Bellatrix Lestrange icons. There was a LOT of texture use in this one, as that has been my new toy of love. A majority of those were taken from
soaked, who does STELLAR stuff—I'm a fan. Besides, you can find my updated resources post here.
Enjoy! ♥ And please do comment if you like them!
(Oh, while I'm at it—if perchance anyone knew of where to find good classic!Who screencaps for the One and Two eras, I'd be ever so grateful. I only found a few and I'd really love to do more of those…)

And a few alternates:

Date: 2014-05-17 03:57 pm (UTC)The Bellatrix ones caught most of my attention, especially the first, but that's probably because Donna isn't in there as well ;)
Looking at the batch as a whole, the colors are so striking! Just incredible to look at <3
Can I ask how long it takes you on average to make on icon? I don't thin of making them myself, but I find this so intriguing! XD

Date: 2014-05-17 06:57 pm (UTC)Yes, Donna was missing, eh ;P But two people gave me links for classic screencaps, so there should be classics in the next batch, which in turn will encourage me to pull out of the billion Eleven era caps I already have saved on my laptop and go pick some RTD era as well ;)
Ummm, well, quite honestly, I don't really know. It depends on the icon. They all get the same preparing treatment—crop, resize, adjusting the light and sometimes the clarity. Then some are done very fast, if I'm pleased right away with the look of them—your Zelena and Wicked Gold were super easy for instance: one or two gradients, then I tried adding a texture and in both cases I just fell in love with the result at first try. Then there are the cases when I can't find something I like right away, and will keep tweaking and trying different options, with more or less pulling my hair out ;) What makes it harder to figure out the time is, I don't make an icon in one go and then never touch it again. When I open Gimp, the first thing I do is browse through the current batch-in-progress from the beginning, just passing the things that look good and stopping when there is one I'm not 100% happy with to rework it a little, and only then do I move on to a new icon. So they basically all get either really reworked when the first try wasn't great, or tweaked a bit for details, more light, less light, stronger colours etc. Until it's posted it's always in progress! ;)

Date: 2014-05-18 06:30 pm (UTC)Thanks a lot for explaining the way you work! It's fascinating. And I find it very interesting to hear that my Zelena and Wicked Gold ones were done so quickly! :D
It must be satisfying yet also very frustrating to keep working until you've posted them - I admire that dedication.

Date: 2014-05-18 07:42 pm (UTC)You're welcome, it was fun giving you the explanation, always nice to ramble on about stuff I'm passionate about to someone who's interested =) And yes! Those only have one texture, I put it and was like "whoa, I'm so keeping that". Others have a combination of textures…
Satisfying and frustrating are both right—it's an airpunch when I finally get something I like, but others I just eventually leave at "decent", but never really love—that's the case for #10. I just never did manage to make it striking.

Date: 2014-05-20 07:02 pm (UTC)The reporting skills training lady said something very accurate today about things being only done when they're done that reminded me of you, but I'm tired and I can't really remember :P (Now that's a clear sentence... *coughs*)
Ah well, not everything can turn out a masterpiece, can they? Makes you only appreciate the best ones more, I think :)

Yes, that sounds like a good attitude! :D
*hugs you* Go rest! ♥♥♥

Date: 2014-05-20 07:32 pm (UTC)That training lady isn't all that good (or bright lol) but like once every three hour class she says something extremely accurate and thought provoking in a sort of off-hand way LOL it's fascinating :P
Can't rest, first I've got News to tell! *drags eyes off Bex Mader and goes to write email*

Date: 2014-05-20 07:59 pm (UTC)I am! It suddenly became overwhelmingly chatty because a newbie, there are tons of super long posts debating all kinds of things about the HP universe now, it's lovely.
Whoa!!!!! Can't wait for the details! :D ♥

Date: 2014-05-19 05:08 pm (UTC)And I LOVE the cropping for 37. And Hartnell and Ford! So cute!
I can see you began cutting figures to add the textures; this is great and kudos to you.
You did a smashing job!

Date: 2014-05-19 06:09 pm (UTC)Thank you, thank you, thank you :D I'm so happy you liked them. #10, seriously? Well, River's face itself is very nice indeed, but that icon was probably the one I was least satisfied with so it's good that wasn't what drew your attention ;)
Haha, thank you about the cropping for #37, I wanted a bit of Matt and it just happened. Hartnell and Ford were a picture I saw on Facebook and could absolutely not resist. Yes about the textures and the cutting! I was despairing a bit at the little flaws in the cutting that are still visible in some, but oh well =P
Thanks again! It means a lot to me that you liked those :D

Date: 2014-06-22 02:52 pm (UTC)Yes ten! Because of River's face obviously, but also because of the play with colours: from left to right, it's light on her hair, then a little darker, then very dark in the shadow of her hair, then back to the lighter shade on her face, then a little darker on the side of her face, then very dark again, then just a little darker than the side of her face and more saturated... I just really like it.
Great icons all of them! and as long as you are having fun with them.

I'm thinking right now that the icons look better on this darker layout ;) I should change my new comm's layout while I'm at it. And I'm certainly having fun! ♥ Been doing some more and still loving it! :D
