Classic!Who s3—The War Machines

flowsoffire*shrieks happily* I AM DONE WITH S3! I AM DONEEEEEEEEEEEEE
And The War Machines was a brilliant episode. It's funny, from the start I got that feeling like the atmosphere had shifted—part of it in the filming, and part of it in the plot, that felt more sci-fi… Idk. But it was fantastic. The plot was quite interesting—and the characters!
One was epic. Love his hat. Dodo was lovely, though she stopped appearing… midway through part 2 or something? But while she was there, she was very nice. I was disappointed by the lack of a proper goodbye with the Doctor though, even a short one; did Jackie Lane have to dash early or what? It was sad, even if she hadn't been a companion for so very long, and I was entirely seconding the Doctor when he muttered "Her love? Oh, there's gratitude for you. Take her all the way around the world, through space and time, and then—". And then she doesn't even come to say goodbye, that's right. *sighs*
However, there are Ben and Polly now! I really enjoyed the two of them. One of those cases when I'm like "I couldn't really say why, but I'm just fond of them". I might like Ben/Polly, depending how it turns out in later episodes, their dynamic seems nice. And I got very random Rory feels when watching Ben—the awkwardness and cuteness, maybe, though their characters are rather different and Ben isn't so different from Steven, come to think about it. (I really liked Steven when he began, and then cared little about him by the end. Hopefully that doesn't happen with Ben.) I also got a strong Ben-Rory, One-Eleven parallel when One was all like "pshhh, there is a lot to do and your friend/girlfriend isn't the important thing right now". "Such a kind old bloke too, isn't he?"—yes, Ben, he is, you'll get used to it. And One just handed him his cloak to hold. I love One to bits ♥
I also really enjoyed the ending, with Ben and Polly all intrigued and just walking into the TARDIS right before it dematerialized. It made me think, and I realized that a huge majority of One's companions just walked in on him without his having a say in the matter! In fact, someone stop me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Vicki was the only one whom he openly asked to travel with him instead of having her just stride on board. (And she's the one who said something vaguely similar to "It's bigger on the inside", too :)) No wonder there's something so special about their dynamic—after Susan's departure, he just needed another young girl to take under his wing, to help him cope with the loss of his granddaughter… But overall, One is still very flippant towards humans: he doesn't get attached right away, although we can see he's shaken when they leave him. (I wonder if Two will be different in that regard.)
His very quick goodbye to Ben and Polly made me laugh—with Ben again, going "Well, the miserable old—". Oh, their dynamic is going to be fun, I hope.
Other fun/cool things:
- the TARDIS with an "Out of order" sign;
- the Doctor fidgeting to explain why the tower seemed alien to him;
- now, not cool: the WOTAN machine called the Doctor "Doctor Who". Several times. I cringed a little each time—canon evidence that doesn't make much sense at all :/
- I LOVED the moment when the Doctor cleverly turned around Dodo's hypnosis to his own advantage, focusing her on his ring and making her fall asleep. I'm so thrilled everytime this ring gets plot-relevant, I basically ship One/ring, lol. Overall, hypnotized!Dodo was quite nice, and hypnotized!Polly even nicer, so chillingly matter-of-fact about obeying the machines, although she still had a hint of her old self left to let Ben flee.
- One's hat! I know, I said it before.
- Ben: "You're a bit past that sort of lark aren't you, Doctor?"
Doctor: "I beg your pardon, young man?"
Ben: "Well, I reckon that's a job for me, sir."
I just like them.
- One to a War Machine: "Ah, temper, temper."
So, here it is. Two serials left to enjoy with One ♥ And then it'll be REGENERATION! *excited*
