It's so interesting to watch River and the Doctor try to think through how much agency they have in their relationship with each other. I love the sense here that they don't really know, that they're trying to figure it out, and that they're afraid both of having agency and of not having it. It's a fascinating way to think about their relationship. Donna has a powerful role here as well, because the Doctor did love her and is so convinced that he had no choice but to do with her what he did...but is he right? And what does River worry he'll one day have to do to her? Or she'll have to do to him?
