Ummm, actually the Doctor *had* done Darillium in my mind, by that time—I hope it's not too unclear ;) Since Rain Gods being set after the Snowmen can be assumed rather safely from Eleven's outfit then, I figured I could keep the idea of River seeking out a retired Doctor, but make it so he had already had that penultimate meeting in her timeline—so he would have lost her in his mind, which would make facing her all the more painful… What with the timey-wimeyness of the relationship, it's a bit far-fetched a thing, but in the state of mind he was in, it seemed like a possible reaction. Given that by the s7 finale he fully acted like he was a widower, never mind that he could still meet a very living River…
