A whole ep in two days! Someone's been watching quite a bit—and boy, does that feel good. :D

The Savages was a pretty lovely episode. Plot was nice; intriguing atmosphere from the start, with some rather nice music to help set a slightly eerie mood. I enjoyed Dodo and Steven's opening dialogue, with Steven all worried about the Doctor and following what he said—especially nice knowing that he would end up leaving the TARDIS at the end of the ep. The spears and screeches from the savages at the start utterly failed at being scary, though. XD

The themes were interesting; it was intriguing to see that the planet's more "civilized" inhabitants had quite some knowledge of the Doctor, quite new. I just got the feel right from the start that such an apparently advanced and perfect civilization had to have something disturbing at its core, lol. And although Dodo also picked up on it rather fast, Steven was blissfully oblivious. Very dismissive of her, too: "Not even Dodo'd be as stupid as that." I wanted to slap him at that -_-

The Doctor's spirit being temporarily moved into Jano as they tried to drain the life force from him, and leaving a conscience and sense of right and wrong as it faded, was quite interesting. I had a blast hearing One's very specific ways of speaking from another actor's mouth at first! That was pretty lovely. And come to think about it, that is nothing really new, but it occurred to me classic!Who does have a recurring theme in the fear of strangers, and here there was a clear esclavagism metaphor in the oppression of the savages. It just stood out to me more in that ep, but there was quite a bit of it before too, I think.

Steven really did get quite the empowering departure: he used to really follow the Doctor's guidance and was good at action, but seemed to get less ideas and initiatives of his own. Here he's left with a huge responsibility and incredibly valued—quite right he'd be a bit scared. Good for him, although he was never a favourite of mine—that's one hell of an opportunity at growth! I have to say though, I'm crossing my fingers really tight for Dodo's departure to be due to another reason than a man. She'd be the third after Susan and Vicki, and I have to admit I would be rather annoyed, lol.

Ben and Polly in the next one! Hope I'll like them, since apparently they'll be staying a while.

Priceless lines:

"And if ever you need the benefit of my wisdom again, I trust and hope you will allow me to express myself with my own free will, rather than place me in an oven, and try and cook it out of me."

And the one and only: "This is my Reactive Vibrator." (Random Doctor device.) I just about died.
