Classic!Who s2—the Time Meddler

Oh god, this is it—I'm done with s2! *flails* And quite sad too, because this was my last real episode with Vicki, there's just one part left in s3 now—all the rest is missing. Won't even see her departure, poor dear! Oh well, that's life—there are always the recons but I've never had the patience with those…
Anyway—first, team!TARDIS. I just really, really enjoyed Steven and Vicki's dynamic, too bad there isn't more with them—okay, okay, shutting up about it. I could hardly recognize the bubbly young man with his panda mascot from the previous episode, lol. He won my heart with just seven words: "IDBI. It means I Don't Believe It.", in response to Vicki's explanation about the TARDIS meaning Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. Overall, I really enjoyed his adventurous, headstrong character and the way he and Vicki kept bickering and trying to get the other to do what they said, but in the end they were a great team. I also think that Steven is a better partner to allow Vicki to shine. They have a balanced dynamic, they're both sharp, keep sending each other quips, and they're adventurous and occasionally reckless. Between Ian and Barbara and Vicki, there wasn't that balance—they were the teacher figures, wiser, but not on her level, although they liked each other. Vicki's attitude to them annoyed me quite often—she was very aware of the age difference ("Well they weren't getting any younger, were they?" That bitchy little cutieface, really.) and the difference of mentalities too. Ian and Barbara didn't fear adventures and they were simply epic, but they were also sensible and down-to-earth, and Vicki seemed to find them old (both from the age difference and coming from a time that was remote past for her), and a bit like homebirds, which wasn't fair at all and irritated me quite a bit. And there were other times in the actual adventures in which they were closer, but sometimes it felt like she was seeking their guidance/protection/reassurance, which was ever so nice, but didn't put them on a footing of equality and partnership either. I'm drawing the big picture mind you, there were parts in which her dynamic with Ian and Barbara felt more balanced and harmonious and they just got along and worked together (that mostly happened during The Chase—I must have mentioned in a previous review that I felt like Vicki's character developed a bit in The Space Museum, as she was left to do important plot-things on her own for the first time, and from then on it seemed she was more independent instead of gravitating around the Doctor). But for the most part they just were very different character types and it travelled from one extreme to the other—from scared!Vicki to slightly bratty!Vicki, but it was always kid!Vicki. With Steven it's different, they bicker but they're equals. Thus this girlie is happy!
Team-wise, I also liked the Doctor and Steven bickering. I died when Steven kept calling him "Doc", and loved the way he was so disbelieving about their traveling in time—and Vicki kept telling on the Doctor's technical difficulties with the TARDIS, lol. So many priceless lines like "Up there is the scanner, those are the doors, that is a chair with a panda on it - sheer poetry, dear boy! Now please stop bothering me!" and (about a Viking helmet) "What do you mean maybe? What do you think it is, a space helmet for a cow?!!". One, I will love you till the very end.
Last, but not least—it was perfect that they opened the episode on Vicki acknowledging that she would miss Ian and Barbara, too—showed that despite her sometimes flippant attitude with them, she really appreciated them, and vice versa. And the Doctor's reference to Susan—yay for the continuity, and I'd actually been wondering whether Vicki knew about her… And later on, the Doctor mentioned Barbara AGAIN because history reasons :D My life was made.
This is it for the companions. Now—the Monk! Well, the name "Meddling Monk" seemed to ring a bell for some reason, so I'd Googled him at the end of the first ep, wondering if he wasn't somehow linked with the new!Who monks for instance, at least as a veiled reference or some such. So I found out he was a Time Lord, and spent the two following parts jumping up and down on my chair and craving some Time Lord quality time. Took its precious time but eventually it came! At the beginning I thought the Monk was fun, quite eloquent (and his ton of little anachronisms made me laugh), but that was it—as soon as the Doctor and him got talking though, I was glued to my screen. It was just so brilliant and hilarious—even when they differed so strongly, they were just basking in their own cleverness and getting all excited and GIGGLY about it, it was crazy. The Monk was so passionate whilst talking about his mad schemes to change history, I simply adored it. I loved seeing his TARDIS—the bugger has got his chameleon circuit working! And asked which type was the Doctor's! The tiny!TARDIS at the very end, once the Doctor had fiddled with it, made me DIE laughing, but then I felt so terrible for the stranded Time Lord. How awful, though the Doctor had no choice but to intervene. The thing in itself made me giggly, but that Time Lord with his mad plans to change the course of history, stranded in 11th century England (although I do know he'll come back =P). And the last shot of the Doctor's TARDIS dematerializing. How cruel! *insert Time Lord feels everywhere*
ALSO THIS IS IMPORTANT—MONK!DOCTOR. I need an icon with Monk! One and Monk!Eleven. This needs to happen.
Over little points that gave me feels: The Doctor, at the beginning, giving Vicki another chance to ask to leave if she so wishes. Vicki getting frightened the Doctor might have left them behind (I don't get how they could miss the TARDIS though, if it really hadn't been moved. Are they that blind?). Vicki commenting about the Doctor: "He's the crew, we're just the passengers." Steven, Vicki and One's faces being shown before the ending credits.
Annnnd here it is. Only one Vicki part left, since I'm not likely to watch the recons, though I'll give them a try—I always try and I always give up around the first minute, lol. Then this Katarina girl whose run is VERY short, and apparently someone called Dodo, of all things. Should be fun! :D And gosh, my first regeneration isn't so far away now! *faints*

Date: 2013-08-31 09:29 am (UTC)The Monk sounds a bit like a proto-Master... though perhaps all Time Lords are like that. Hee!

Date: 2013-08-31 10:25 am (UTC)Yes, that's a good point—but he wasn't evil, just a man with a mad plan. I'll have to see the Master early on to compare.
If all Time Lords are mad people I'm going to have so much fun… *flails some more*

Date: 2013-08-31 06:56 pm (UTC)I think I've seen almost all eps with Time Lords except the Time Meddler, heh, and they are great. Plus, the Doctor is often the best dressed person in the room...

LOL, I can't wait to see the Time Lords' outfits then! :D Even Romana? ;)
Their general thing seems to be 'oh, it's colourful/sparkly/flowy/tight/a big hat how wonderful'. It's awesome. Romana veers between super well dressed and... waitwhatisthat? Kind of like the Doctor. ;)

Yes, he is! Don't know when he appears though… It's his only other appearance apparently.

I'm going to LOVE that :D

Date: 2013-08-31 07:59 pm (UTC)Oh, I love Two! He's so jumpy and funny and slyly manipulative. Not that One isn't, of course, it's just... Two has that hand-flaily, DNW, this-did-not-work-out-as-planned-but-I-am-a-GENIUS air that Eleven has sometimes and I like that. *g*
